Basic Do's and Dont's of Liquid Latex.

Liquid latex is a fun product to work with, and it can create some amazing things. It works well as an adhesive as long as something to use as a 'second skin'. It's fairly inexpensive, and is easy for beginners who just wanna make a cool halloween look to work with!

Liquid Latex used to create the peeling of an old blister.

I use Kryolan Thin Latex, which costs $12.00 AUD from their website for 100ml, it's really good quality, and isnt too much if you just want to create a halloween look!
Be prepared though, liquid latex, no matter the brand will STINK. It's latex combined with ammonia, which when you open the package for the first time can be a little intimidating but don't worry, it's totally normal.

Now, some do's -

  • DO make sure you're applying the latex in a ventilated area - don't do it in a tiny room with no ventilation, the ammonia wont smell great.
  • DO use multiple thin layers. Layer, layer, layer, layer! Make sure you let each layer dry before you put the next layer on. It's a good idea to use a hairdryer to dry the layers to get this done quicker! Just make sure the hair dryer doesn't burn the person you're applying it to!
  • DO make sure that you don't place it near the eyes, the ammonia is dangerous to them, and it won't end well.
  • DO let it air if you're planning on applying it on the face - the ammonia will be too strong for the person otherwise, and there may be watery eyes!
  • DO shave ANY area before applying it. Otherwise it WILL stick.
  • DO apply vaseline or moisturiser to the skin before the latex, to make sure it doesnt harm the persons skin!
  • If you're wanting to do something to your brows, use a stick of Kryolan Eyebrow Plastic, and then use 2 coats (or so) of Sealor, and THEN apply the latex.
Don'ts-
  • DONT APPLY IT OVER HAIR! If this happens, then you're not going to want to rip it off, or it will be like waxing that area and it WILL hurt. The latex WILL bond to hair. Don't say I didn't warn you! If this happens, it's best to get in the shower and use a lot of soap, and a comb to gently pry it off the skin. Then make sure to moisturise the skin to make sure any damage is repaired quickly.
  • DON'T smell it too closely! Dont smell it on purpose, no waving the bottle under peoples noses because this can end in a blood nose!
  • DON'T dry it with a hair dryer if you're combining liquid latex with gelatin. The gelatin will melt, and could burn the person you're applying it to!
That's all I can think of for now - do you have any tips or tricks? Comment below!
